He wanted to stay in Rivendell with his Uncle, but realizes that he must take Isildur's Bane (The One Ring) to the fiery pits of Mordor. He weilds a sword given to him by Bilbo and made by the elves, it's name is Sting. Bilbo got the sword from a cave in the prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit. At the beggining of the story, he is 33 years old.

He passes the ring on to Frodo when he sets off to Rivendell.
Samwise Gamgee- He is Bilbo Baggins gardener (when Bilbo sets off to Rivendell and leaves the house to Frodo, he becomes Frodo's gardener). He is very loyal to Frodo and he refuses to leave his side. He is Frodo's backbone through most of the book. He and the other main Hobbits (Frodo, Pippin, and Merry) are good friends.
Meriadoc Brandybuck- His nickname is Merry. He is a friend of Frodo and comes along as one of the "Company". He is loyal to Frodo and will not leave his side. Him and Pippin are very close friends, and together they tend to cause trouble every where they go. They get into just about everything.
